What is an IP Address?
An **Internet Protocol (IP) address** is a unique numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. It serves two main functions: host or network interface identification and location addressing.
IPv4 vs. IPv6
**IPv4** is the older version, consisting of 32-bit addresses (e.g., 192.168.1.1). Due to the depletion of IPv4 addresses, **IPv6** was developed using 128-bit addresses (e.g., 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334), providing a virtually unlimited number of addresses.
How Geolocation Works
Our **IP Geolocation** tool maps your public IP to a physical location using global databases. While it can pinpoint your city and ISP, it usually doesn't show your exact home address, protecting your basic privacy while providing useful network diagnostics.
Why check your IP info?
- Remote Access: Find your home or office IP to configure VPNs or remote desktops.
- Troubleshooting: Verify if your VPN or proxy is working correctly by checking the detected location.
- Security Auditing: Ensure your ISP isn't leaking private internal network data.
